Some visitors cannot view a Movie on my site

A movie file is stored using a "codec" which dictates how the movie is stored and compressed. If a site visitor does not have the codec that your movie uses, they will be unable to view it.

To find out what codec a movie uses:

  1. Open the movie in Quicktime Player.
  2. Press command-i to open the "Movie Info" window.
  3. The codec used is listed under the heading "Format."

If your movie does use a codec that site visitors do not possess, you can ask them to install it. However, this may not be entirely practical. Instead, you should use the software that produced the movie to convert it to a more suitable codec. Please see your software's manual for more information.

If the video has come from an external source, you may find Apple's Quicktime Pro useful for converting the movie.

It is also possible that some of your visitors are Windows users without Quicktime installed. If so, request that they install Quicktime from Apple's website.
